Day 3 – I have no idea where this came from really! Plums for WCW.
You pick up
apples in the market
preferring them to
Supermarket Braeburns
I refuse to eat one until
it is washed
scrubbed grit out of the skin
shined on your sleeve, you
think this amusing because
I eat food from bins.
Years ago I only ate apples
peeled, halved, and halved again
like oranges and the rare peach.
Plums, I never liked but have you noticed
they’re not really around anymore?
I eat bananas and blueberries now,
juice them like a savings account
I can’t keep full, dip them in
stolen honey (expensive
but good for the throat).
Not a lot of ‘if-it’s and chips’
for dinner any more. Now fresh
veg in the fridge, a lifetime of plastic
in the freezer, where you save every
leftover for another day.
I love you for it, your apples
bought with effort in the market,
outside the library where you fed
my imagination with books
and my mouth with fruit,
discovering each one in my own time.
